Empowering Through Guidance
Our mentors played a pivotal role in the success of Play for Democracy. By teaching the fundamentals of creating interactive experiences and explaining the specific roles within a game development team, they provided our participants with a robust foundation. This knowledge was crucial as they embarked on their game development journeys, enabling them to transform their ideas into reality.
One of our mentors reflected on the importance of sharing even the most basic information, realizing that it can make a significant difference. The experience underscored the value of time management and the profound impact of self-confidence in helping young people reach their potential.
What Worked Well
Several key elements contributed to the program’s success. The September camp served as a catalyst, providing an immersive environment for learning and collaboration. Monthly meetings allowed us to track progress and maintain momentum. The unwavering support and openness of our mentors, combined with the dedication of our participants, were instrumental in achieving the project goals. Our recruitment strategy was exceptional, evidenced by the minimal drop-out rate, which affirmed that we had selected the right young talents.
Development and Achievements
The participants of Play for Democracy gained much more than technical skills. They formed meaningful relationships with peers and mentors who shared their passions. By the end of the program, they had completed two games, which they proudly added to their CVs. Exposure at industry events allowed them to network with other game developers, opening doors to further opportunities in the field.
Positive Feedback
The feedback from participants has been exceedingly positive. They appreciated the guidance provided by our mentors and felt a deeper understanding of democratic values and civic engagement. This feedback affirms the effectiveness of our approach and encourages us to continue refining our methods.
Overcoming Challenges
Time management emerged as a significant challenge for our mentors, who balanced their professional and personal commitments with the demands of the program. Packaging feedback in a way that was suitable for the participants’ level of understanding was another hurdle. Despite these challenges and the geographical distances between team members, we managed to work effectively, demonstrating once more the importance of virtual collaboration.
Replicability and Scalability
The Play for Democracy framework is highly replicable and scalable: the principles of fostering innovation and collaboration remain the same. This type of project can be successfully implemented in smaller cities, with the camp model serving as a foundation for team bonding and personal growth.
Community Impact
The program has had a significant impact on the community. Young participants developed a better understanding of their roles in society and the importance of democratic values. Some have taken their first steps toward a career in game developemtn, forming mentorship relationships that will benefit them in the long term.
Sustainability
The sustainability of Play for Democracy lies in its potential to gamify challenging educational themes and reach young people who need this knowledge the most. There is immense potential in these young talents; our mission is to connect with them and nurture their growth.

Play for Democracy is a project developed and implemented by Arden, with the support of its partners, and funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Program.
Arden is a non-profit charity of the game development community, pursuing educational and cultural programs for social impact.
We aim to nurture future generations by facilitating alternative education programs. And we explore our culture’s views, beliefs, and practices through creative arts as physical representations.
PFD is a youth participation project (ages 18-25) taking place from July 2023 to August 2024. The initiative is dedicated to young people with civic spirit and a passion for video games, aiming to encourage the younger generation to become active citizens, both through voting and other forms of civic engagement.

The person that has this role is responsible for leading the creative vision of a video game. They work closely with all the departments (design, art, programming, and sound) to create a unified and engaging gaming experience.

But for a Marketing Director, it should be second nature, even if it means dealing directly with the public through marketing strategies and social media campaigns. The person having this role can bridge the gap between the brand and the fans, as well as being a leader for their team and setting an example for them.

In essence, it is the first one to see how the public reacts to certain marketing strategies, as well as what people say about a brand’s service/ product.

În unele cazuri, un manager de social media va trebui să fie înaintea concurenței în ceea ce privește producerea de conținut viral, găsind mereu o nouă metodă de a crește reach-ul companiei (câți oameni o văd) și engagement-ul (câți oameni vorbesc despre ea).

This kind of manager will need to be up to speed with any online trends, memes, and news. in order for the brand’s Social Media footprint to not be seen as outdated. In some cases, a Social Media Manager will also need to be ahead of the pack in terms of becoming viral, always thinking of a new way to increase a brand’s Reach (how many people see it) and Engagement (how many people talk about it).

From writing the texts of posts to cementing the tone of voice of a brand, with the help from the Social Media Manager, a Copywriter’s presence can be felt throughout a game’s marketing and brand. Besides having a very strong grasp on English, close to native levels, the person having this role needs to know the precise approach each specific Social Media Platform has, as well as knowing fully the service/ product it writes for.

Pentru a înțelege mai bine artiștii cu care lucrează, coordonatorul ar trebui să aibă o bază de cunoștințe în ceea ce privește procesul VFX. Astfel, îi va fi mult mai ușor să înțeleagă etapele de lucru, timpul de care e nevoie pentru a fi îndeplinite și gradul de încărcare cu proiecte al artiștilor.

Supervizorii sunt cei care sunt implicați activ în întregul pipeline de VFX, cei care transformă viziunea regizorului în realitate, ținând cont în același timp de nevoile membrilor echipei cu care lucrează.
CG Supervisor este persoana responsabilă de întregul conținut 3D al unei producții. El trebuie să interpreteze și să implementeze dorințele creative ale regizorului, ținând cont de program și de buget.
VFX Supervisor este cel care urmărește cu atenție toate etapele procesului VFX și cel care verifică toate materialele (atât din punct de vedere artistic, creativ, cât și tehnic), înainte ca acestea să fie trimise către client.
De asemenea, există și on-set supervisors, care stau pe platoul de filmare și se ocupă de tot ce înseamnă VFX. Ei se asigură că se filmează corect din punct de vedere tehnic, pentru a putea fi folosite eficient în post-producție (VFX).
Îți este potrivit dacă: ai focusul pe comunicare, răbdare, atenție la detalii, ai deschidere pentru soluționarea problemelor și propunerea de soluții.
UTIL: organizare și precizie în exprimare ;cunoștințe tehnice și artistice de imagine și 3D, înțelegerea întregului proces de 3D și efecte vizuale, film, fotografie.
Departamentul de FX este responsabil cu recrearea fenomenelor naturale precum apă, foc, explozii, fum, și a unor efecte abstracte, precum transformarea unor personaje sau simularea unor elemente magice. Pentru a nu fi animate de mână, deoarece ar dura prea mult și ar fi prea dificil, acest tip de elemente sunt simulate de artiștii FX.
Îți este potrivit dacă: îți place matematica, fizica, informatica și ai abilități artistice.
UTIL: cunoștințe ale programului Houdini.
Procesul de compositing se referă la integrarea armonioasă a elementelor generate pe calculator și a cadrelor originale. Este ultimul pas din modul de lucru (pipeline-ul) VFX.
De exemplu: în scenariul unui film, apare o scenă în care o rachetă lovește o clădire. În primul rând, este filmat fundalul în care se va întâmpla această acțiune, care conține clădirea din prim-plan și orașul din spate. Modeling artists creează racheta, animatorii îi conferă mișcarea, artiștii de lighting pun lumina pe rachetă și artiștii FX simulează fumul și explozia. După ce toate aceste etape sunt finalizate, artistul de compositing preia elementele și le combină pentru a crea un cadru care să dea viață imaginației regizorului.

Animatorii trebuie să jongleze cu conceptele de timp și mișcare. Adeseori, au nevoie de referințe din viața reală pentru a putea crea o animație de bună calitate. Trebuie să fie capabili să portretizeze personalitatea personajelor și să exprime emoții prin mișcări, ceea ce implică o analiză minuțioasă a referințelor alese.
Îți este potrivit dacă: ești pasionat de actorie sau ai valențe în această zonă (în cazul animării personajelor), ai abilități mimetice, ești un bun observator, ești atent la detalii.

Artistul de Rigging este liantul dintre departamentele de Modeling și Animație. Sarcina persoanei care are acest rol este aceea de a crea o structură internă (ca un fel de schelet) și de a organiza o serie de puncte de manipulare, numite controlere, pentru ca animatorul își poată controla obiectul. Practic, artistul de Rigging este omul care pune sforile unei marionete.
Precum animatorul, artistul de Rigging trebuie să fie atent la detalii și să analizeze referințe din viața reală. Calitatea rigului are un impact puternic asupra proceselor ulterioare și nu este conferită doar de aspectele tehnice ale jobului, ci și de cele artistice și de înțelegerea mișcării/deformării, specifică obiectelor respective.
Îți este potrivit dacă: ești pasionat de anatomie și mecanica obiectelor, ai abilități de analiză minuțioasă.
UTIL: cunoștințe în Maya, 3DsMax, Advanced Skeleton, mGear.
Persoana care are acest rol, așa cum se poate înțelege și din numele departamentului, „potrivește” mișcarea camerei virtuale din imaginile generate pe calculator (CG) cu cea a camerei reale, pentru ca cele două elemente (real/3D) să se poată combina în mod convingător, credibil.
Astfel, recreează scena în 3D urmărind o multitudine de puncte din cadru (trackere), pentru a replica exact mișcarea camerei de filmat.
Îți este potrivit dacă: ești pasionat de matematică și algoritmi, ești perseverent, meticulos, puțin încăpățânat și ai foarte multă răbdare.
Trebuie să cunoști aspecte legate de tehnica de filmare, dar și despre ceea ce urmează după (CG, Compositing).
UTIL: cunoștințe în Syntheyes, 3D Equalizer, PFtrack.
Atunci când este finalizat, modelul 3D este gri, pentru a oferi o bază cât mai curată artiștilor de Texturing. Departamentul de Texturing se ocupă cu adăugarea culorii și detaliilor pe un model 3D, pentru ca acesta să pară cât mai real cu putință.
Îți este potrivit dacă: ești pasionat de artă plastică, pictură, dacă ai simț estetic.
UTIL: cunoștințe ale programelor Photoshop, Substance, 3DCoat, Mari.
Prin procesul de Modelare se crează un obiect/personaj/mediu (environment) în 3D, pornind de la o schiță 2D sau un concept scris. Departamentul de modeling poate fi împărțit în două specializări: prop modeling și character modeling.
Artiștii din prima categorie se ocupă mai mult de modelarea obiectelor hard surface, precum clădiri, mașini, arme, ș.a.m.d. Cei din a doua categorie se ocupă de modelarea personajelor, creaturilor sau a obiectelor ce au caracter organic.
Practic, artiștii de prop modeling creează tot mediul în care personajul creat de artiștii de character modeling va acționa.

Persoana care are acest rol se asigură că sursele de lumină sunt aranjate corespunzător într-o scenă pentru ca toate elementele 3D să fie bine definite. Practic, în acest stadiu de lucru, elementele de grafică computerizată (CG) încep să prindă viață.
Folosindu-se de lumini și umbre, artiștii de lighting adaugă un nivel de realism obiectelor, ținând cont de atmosfera/estetica filmului. De asemenea, sunt responsabili și pentru aspectul unitar al cadrelor dintr-o secvență.

Through the Modeling process, an object/character/environment is created in 3D, starting from a 2D sketch or a written concept. The modeling department can be divided into two specializations: prop modeling and character modeling.
The artists in the first category work on modeling the hard surface objects, such as buildings, cars, weapons. Those in the second category work on characters, creatures or objects that have an organic nature.
Essentially, prop modeling artists create the entire environment in which the character created by the character modeling artists will act.
This role it’s right for you if:

It could be a role for you if you have a passion for photography/painting & you pay attention to details.

The VFX Team Coordinator, as the role title implies, coordinates the entire team and maintains constant communication between the client, supervisor and team members.
Responsibilities:
In order to understand the artists they are working with, the coordinator should have a knowledge base of the VFX process. This means understanding the stages of work, the time it takes to complete them and the degree of load with projects of the artists.
It suits you if: you are organized, attentive to details, you have communication skills, you are empathetic and you are a fast learner.
USEFUL: knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace, project management software (Asana, Ftrack, Shotgrid), foreign languages.
Supervisors are the ones who are actively involved in the entire VFX pipeline, the ones who turn the director’s vision into reality, while keeping in mind the needs of their team members.
The CG Supervisor is the person responsible for the entire 3D content of a production. He must understand and implement the creative wishes of the director, keeping in mind the schedule and the budget.
The VFX Supervisor is the one who keeps a close eye on all stages of the VFX process and checks all materials (artistically, creatively and technically) before are sent to the client.
There are also on-set supervisors, who stay on set and take care of all things VFX. They ensure that the shots are technically correct so that they can be used effectively in post-production (VFX).
It suits you if: you have strong communication skills, patience, attention to details, you are open to solving problems and proposing solutions.
USEFUL: organized and accurate in communication; framing and 3D technical and artistic knowledge, good understanding of the entire process: 3D and visual effects, film, photography,
The FX department is responsible for recreating natural phenomena such as water, fire, explosions, smoke, and abstract effects such as transforming characters or simulating magical elements. In order not to be animated by hand, as it would take too long and is quite difficult, these types of elements are simulated by FX artists.
It is suitable for you if: you like math, physics, computer science and have artistic skills.
USEFUL: Knowledge of the Houdini program
The compositing process refers to the harmonious integration of computer-generated elements and original frames. It is the last phase in the VFX pipeline.
For example: in a movie script, there is a scene where a missile hits a building. First, the background in which this action will take place is filmed, which contains the building in the foreground and the city in the background. Modeling artists create the rocket, animators give it movement, lighting artists put the light on the rocket and FX artists simulate the smoke and explosion. After all these phases are completed, the compositing artist takes the elements and combines them to create a frame that brings the director’s imagination to life.
Compositing combines visual elements from different sources into a single image, often to create the illusion that those elements were part of the original frame in the first place.
It’s right for you if you: have great attention to detail, love photography, have knowledge of colors and how to work with them, know framing.
USEFUL: knowledge of AfterEffects, Photoshop (2D compositing), Nuke, Mocha.
The animation department is responsible for animating the objects, characters, and creatures in a frame. Animation is creating the illusion of motion for both drawings/sketches and 3D models. Based on the “skeletons” provided by those in the rigging department; it brings personality and life to 3D models.
Animators must juggle the concepts of time and motion. They often need real-life references in order to create a good quality animation. The person that has this role portrays the characters’ personality and express emotions through movements, which involves a careful analysis of the chosen references.
It is suitable for you if: you are passionate about acting or have valences in this area (in the case of character animation), you have mimetic skills, you are a good observer, you pay attention to details.
USEFUL: Knowledge of Maya, Blender, AfterEffects, Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, Procreate.
The Rigging Artist is the link between the Modeling and Animation departments. The person in this role creates an internal structure (like a skeleton) and organizes a series of manipulation points, called controllers, for the animator to control his object. In other words, the rigging artist is the man who puts the strings on a marionette.
Like the animator, the rigging artist must pay attention to detail and analyze real-life references. The quality of the rig has a strong impact on the subsequent processes and is given by the technical aspects of the job, by the artistic ones and by the understanding of movement/deformation, specific to the respective objects.
It is suitable for you if: you are passionate about anatomy and the mechanics of objects, you have the skills of thorough analysis.
USEFUL: Knowledge of Maya, 3DsMax, Advanced Skeleton, mGear.
The person who has this role, as it can be understood from the name of the department, “matches” the movement of the virtual camera in computer generated images (CG) with that of the real camera, so that the two elements (real/3D) can be combined convincingly, in a valid way.
Thus, it recreates the scene in 3D by following a multitude of points in the frame (trackers), to exactly replicate the movement of the filming camera.
It suits you if: you are passionate about mathematics and algorithms, you are persistent, meticulous, a little stubborn and have a lot of patience.
You need to know aspects related to the filming technique, but also about what comes after (CG, Compositing).
USEFUL: Knowledge in Syntheyes, 3D Equalizer, PFtrack.
